Video game legend Yu Suzuki, known for celebrated titles such as Space Harrier, OutRun, Virtua Fighter, and Shenmue, is releasing a new game, Air Twister, on consoles and PC on November 10. The game, reminiscent of his classic arcade-like shooter Space Harrier, was originally released as an Apple Arcade exclusive. Inspiration behind Air Twister includes the 1980s film The NeverEnding Story and Queen's music.
Suzuki also reflected back on his career, stating that his contribution to varying gaming sectors resulted from a practice of leveraging the technical limitations at the time. For example, Virtua Racing, his first full 3D polygon game, was conceived because it was challenging to animate human characters in 3D. Also, he could only animate two characters on the Virtua Fighter screen at a time due to technical limitations.
Suzuki additionally shared the process of Shenmue's development, mentioning that procedurally generated elements enabled them to automate a great deal of tuning and debugging during its creation. And in a turn to the potential future, he expressed his hope to make Shenmue 4 inviting to newcomers, possibly through embedding the backstory within the main game through playable flashbacks.
Outside of Shenmue, Suzuki revealed that he's currently working on various other exciting game ideas. Regarding Air Twister, he emphasized that it is a full 3D game designed to move like a 2D game, thereby creating a unique gaming experience.
