Seventeen years after its initial release, the classic real-time strategy game Star Wars: Empire at War is receiving significant updates, sparking excitement within its passionate gaming community. Developed by Petroglyph Games, Empire at War is set during the period between Star Wars Episodes 3 and 4, focusing on the conflict between the Empire and the Rebel forces. Despite its age, the game maintains an active player base, with approximately 2,000 concurrent players on Steam.
Petroglyph issued a "maintenance patch" earlier in November 2023, addressing minor bugs and balancing player experiences. They followed up with a major update, converting Empire at War and its expansion, Forces of Corruption, to 64-bit applications, likely improving performance and resolving memory issues that led to crashes. Additionally, multiplayer desynchronization bugs have been addressed, enhancing game stability.
The switch to 64-bit has also raised the potential for a revitalized modding community. Fans speculate about the possibility of a remake or sequel, encouraged by the developer's renewed attention to the game. Petroglyph's recent projects include 2020's Command & Conquer Remastered Collection and 2023's The Great War: Western Front.
This shows a trend where developers continue supporting their older titles, extending their lifespans and keeping their communities engaged. Whether or not a new installment is on the horizon, Star Wars: Empire at War proves that with dedication from creators, even classic games can remain relevant in today’s gaming landscape.
