Sony's Ghost of Yotei Aims to Expand PlayStation into Franchise

Sep 25, 2024 10:35 AM

Sony has ambitious plans for the Ghost of Tsushima franchise, with the upcoming sequel, Ghost of Yotei, being a key part of this expansion strategy. As stated by Hermen Hulst, head of Sony’s studio business group, the goal is to transform PlayStation franchises into larger entertainment properties, including movies and TV shows. Drawing from the success of series like HBO's The Last of Us, Hulst believes that cross-media adaptations not only generate renewed interest in the original games but also attract new players. The Ghost of Yotei sequel is set for a 2025 release on PS5, and a film adaptation directed by John Wick's Chad Stahelski is currently in development.

Ghost of Tsushima has achieved significant commercial success, selling over 13 million copies since its release in 2020, establishing itself as one of the most successful titles from PlayStation Studios. Creative directors have also teased a shift in gameplay design, aiming to balance open-world exploration with more meaningful choices and the introduction of firearms alongside traditional melee combat.

What is Ghost of Yotei about?

Ghost of Yotei is the sequel to the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima. It continues the story of Jin Sakai, placing him in new scenarios that explore the conflict between his personal honor and the survival of his people. The game will also experiment with new gameplay mechanics to enhance player engagement.
