Sony Hikes PS5 Price Again in UK and Europe What’s Next

Apr 14, 2025 8:24 AM

Sony has announced yet another price increase for the PS5 Digital Edition, raising the cost by £40 in the UK and €50 in mainland Europe due to challenging economic conditions, which include high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates. The new prices are set at £430 for the UK and €500 for Europe. Meanwhile, the PS5 with a disc drive has not seen a price increase in these regions but has increased prices in Australia and New Zealand as well. The increases mean that the PS5 Digital Edition is now £70 or €100 more than its original launch price. Interestingly, the price of the Disc Drive add-on has been reduced to £70/€80, potentially reflecting excess stock. At the new price point, the PS5 Digital Edition aligns with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 bundle that includes Mario Kart World.

Why has Sony increased the price of the PS5 again?

Sony cites a challenging economic environment as the reason behind the price hikes, signaling ongoing inflation and fluctuating currency exchange rates that have impacted production and retail costs.

The PS5 was released in 2020 and quickly became one of the most sought-after gaming consoles. It features advanced hardware that supports high-definition graphics and fast loading times, making it a favorite among gamers. This latest price increase follows a previous rise in August 2022, reflecting Sony's continued efforts to adapt to evolving market conditions.

Man, Sony really testing our loyalty with these price bumps—guess inflation’s hitting harder than a Soulsborne boss. At least the disc drive discount feels like a sneaky way to say sorry, not sorry.

Oof, another price hike At this rate, the PS5 Digital Edition might start charging us just to look at it. At least the disc drive discount softens the blow a little for physical media fans. Kinda wild how the Digital Edition’s creeping up in price while the disc version stays put—guess Sony really wants to nudge us toward that add-on life.
