Retro Studios once canceled a Portal-like game

Nov 06, 2023 5:25 PM

Retro Studios, the developer behind Metroid Prime, once cancelled a game that was similar to the Portal games, according to a recent YouTube video from DidYouKnowGaming. Following the completion of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption in 2007, the studio began working on a puzzle game named Adept. The game would involve the use of cylinders to solve various puzzles, featuring abilities such as teleportation.

However, development was halted when Nintendo intervened. Paul Tozour, the developer of Metroid Prima 2 and 3 and the prototype of the new puzzle game, explained that Nintendo was not familiar with the Portal games and supposedly harbored a "not invented here" syndrome. He even offered a copy of Portal to a Nintendo executive, who declined it, leading to the discontinuation of the Portal-like GameCube game.

Nintendo did suggest the possibility of launching the game on the Nintendo DS, but Tozour wasn't interested. Ending the development and possible release of this innovative game.
