Pikmin 4 has become the best-selling game in the Pikmin franchise, with Nintendo announcing sales of 2.5 million units since its launch on the Switch in July. Nintendo's strategy to increase Pikmin 4 visibility included introducing Pikmin Easter eggs in Super Nintendo World and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, as well as releasing HD versions of earlier Pikmin games. More marketing efforts, such as Pikmin-themed quizzes on trains in Japan, contributed to its success.
In Japan, Pikmin 4's success was boosted by the nostalgia factor, as adults who enjoyed Pikmin as children are now playing the new release with their own kids. IGN rated Pikmin 4 highly, commending its fresh take on the series' gameplay and additional post-credit levels.
Given the success of Pikmin 4, future installments such as Pikmin 5 seem likely. Nintendo is expected to launch a new console in 2024, tentatively known as the Switch 2, featuring portable mode and an LCD screen to reduce costs. This upcoming console will include a cartridge slot but details on backward compatibility with Switch games are not yet confirmed.
