Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix truly takes some bold directions with Ubisoft IP, leading some to express their surprise that Ubisoft allowed creator Adi Shankar to implement such unique adaptations. The show includes a remix of popular Ubisoft characters, such as the alterations made to Rayman, transforming him into an unhinged propagandist, and a shocking scene where Beyond Good and Evil protagonist Jade’s head is blown off.
Shankar revealed, during a recent chat with IGN, that Ubisoft fully supported this creative freedom. The company even granted Shankar a representative to join him at each meeting, just to confirm all the wild ideas he proposed would be accepted.
Rayman is portrayed as a flawed propagandist news anchor who turns into a vigilante after some serious realization, while Bullfrog, inspired by Assassin’s Creed, becomes the show's moral compass despite being a well-established killer. Shankar explains his curious decision for a frog character, citing that he believes frogs are "cool" and often taken for granted, drawing from his philosophy of the nature of reality to characterize these roles. One of the biggest surprises in the series is when the character known as The Warden is unveiled to be Sarah Fisher, the daughter of Splinter Cell protagonist Sam Fisher. The series takes a dark twist when it is uncovered that Sarah is responsible for her father's tortuous imprisonment. Despite all the events, Shankar suggests that Sarah might not be entirely evil. He describes her as a traumatized character living with guilt from childhood, arguing there may be reason behind her actions.
However, one of the most shocking moments in the series is the brutal killing of Jade from Beyond Good and Evil. This event, described by Shankar as a “real thing that happened”, sets a grim and realistic tone to the universe.
The series also includes live-action sequences, meant to create a shift in the storytelling format and emphasize emotional drama. It serves as a form of reality commentary where the show's universe is represented as a cartoon and the characters' virtual reality experiences are portrayed in live-action.
Although Captain Laserhawk hasn’t been renewed, Shankar says he would be interested in telling more stories in this dystopian universe, describing it as an "entire universe that exists in his head". Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
