Assassin's Creed Red set to drop in late 2023

Jan 31, 2024 1:50 PM

Ubisoft is gearing up for an eventful few years, with a slew of high-profile game releases on the horizon. Among the most anticipated is 'Assassin's Creed: Codename Red'—set in feudal Japan and expected to launch in the latter half of this year. Additionally, Ubisoft's lineup includes 'Star Wars: Outlaws' launching in the first half of the year along with future projects like new entries in the 'Ghost Recon' and 'Far Cry' series, a 'Assassin's Creed: Black Flag' remake, more 'Assassin's Creed' games including 'Hexe' and 'Invictus,' and the much-awaited 'Splinter Cell' remake slated for 2025 and 2026.

However, industry insider Tom Henderson warns of potential delays due to ongoing struggles at Ubisoft, such as recently cancelling a dozen battle royale games and numerous project postponements. Beyond development issues, Ubisoft also contends with underperforming sales, exemplified by the lukewarm reception of 'Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown' and the modest commercial success of 'Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.' The company had previously laid off over a hundred employees last November, and there's concern more layoffs may follow if financial targets are not met.

When is 'Assassin's Creed: Codename Red' expected to release, and what setting will it feature?

'Assassin's Creed: Codename Red' is expected to release in the second half of this year and will be set in feudal Japan.

"Assassin's Creed" is a longstanding and beloved franchise that started in 2007, hailed for its engaging storytelling, historical backdrops, and the seamless blend of stealth, action, and exploration. The series has taken players through various eras, from the Crusades in the Holy Land to the Italian Renaissance, the American Revolution, and more. Venturing into feudal Japan has long been a request from fans, and 'Codename Red' could provide an entirely new cultural and historical context for the series renowned parkour and stealth mechanics, potentially adding a fresh layer of depth to the familiar gameplay. As anticipation builds, so do expectations for Ubisoft to deliver a game that both honors the series' roots and pushes its boundaries.

Sounds like Ubisoft's got their work cut out for 'em—a full slate with some heavy hitters and fan dreams like 'Assassin's Creed: Codename Red' tapping into that samurai action we've been craving. Here's hoping they can navigate those choppy development waters and deliver the goods without hitting more delays or staffing snags.
