Xbox Adaptive and Elite Series 2 Controller Allow Keyboard Remapping

Oct 18, 2023 6:01 PM
Xbox recently stepped up its efforts to make gaming more accessible, unveiling new accessibility features that include remapping options on the Xbox Adaptive Controller and Elite Series 2 to support keyboard functionality – thus expanding inclusivity in PC gaming. A new blog post from Microsoft revealed that both controllers could have nearly 90 keyboard keys remapped, enabling players with limited mobility to play an even broader range of PC games. This feature is especially useful for PC games that either don't support a controller or have less intuitive controller setups. Typically newer games on PC include dual support for both controllers and mouse/keyboard, but for older games or ones with relatively unfriendly controller settings, the new feature becomes crucial. An instance of this is the Steam version of Dead Rising 2, which supports both mouse/keyboard and a controller, but requires significant workarounds or modifications to have proper controller operation. The keyboard remapping feature is currently available to the Xbox Accessibility Insiders League and Xbox Insiders via the Xbox Accessories app on PC and console, and is scheduled to be released to the general public "'in the coming months". The news report was authored by Taylor Lyles, a reporter with IGN, who can be followed on twitter @TayNixster.
