Why Some Games Run Better on PS5 Than Xbox Series X

Jul 02, 2024 9:23 AM

Digital Foundry's recent analysis reveals why some games run better on Sony's PlayStation 5, despite Microsoft’s Xbox Series X being more powerful on paper. Both consoles, launched in November 2020, have their unique advantages. The Xbox Series X boasts 12 teraflops of GPU performance, compared to the PS5's 10.28 teraflops. However, the PS5's more efficient GPU compiler, lower-level APIs, and higher clock speeds can give it the edge in certain games. For instance, FromSoftware’s Elden Ring, particularly its Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, runs faster on PS5.

According to Digital Foundry, while the PS5 offers better frame rates in some cases, the Xbox Series X provides a smoother and more consistent experience due to its superior variable refresh rate support. Microsoft's approach also aligns better with PC development, offering benefits in particular scenarios. Looking ahead, rumors suggest that Sony may release a PS5 Pro and Microsoft could introduce an Xbox handheld, which will bring new dynamics to the ongoing console competition.

Why does Elden Ring run better on PS5 than Xbox Series X?

Elden Ring, including its Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, benefits from the PS5's efficient GPU compiler, lower-level APIs, and higher clock speeds, resulting in better performance on the PS5 despite its lower teraflop count compared to the Xbox Series X.

For fans of Elden Ring, its development by FromSoftware has garnered significant acclaim. The action RPG thrusts players into a vast, intricate world crafted by Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R. R. Martin. The game emphasizes challenging combat, deep lore, and open-world exploration, distinguishing it as a noteworthy title in the gaming community. The forthcoming DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree, updates content and continues to expand the game’s immersive narrative and gameplay experiences.
