Wayfinder's Massive Update: No More Microtransactions, Offline Mode Added

May 16, 2024 2:58 PM

Exciting news for fans of Wayfinder, a hybrid of shooter-action-RPG elements, as Airship Syndicate announces a significant game update. Instead of following the traditional model for live service games, the developer is rolling out the "Echoes" update which removes online requirements, permitting offline play and transition away from microtransactions. Originally an online, free-to-play game published by Digital Extremes, the title faced challenging times and has now shifted to a purchase model with a $25 price tag. All existing in-game purchases will convert to a new currency for cosmetic items. The update is set to launch on May 31 for Founder's Pack owners on PC, with public sale resuming on June 11. PS5 players can expect the update by summer, and an end to PS4 support, although a free upgrade to the PS5 version is provided. The game aims to exit Early Access later in the year and is also expected to release on Xbox Series X/S. Airship Syndicate is committed to supporting and expanding the game with the hopes of attracting a broader audience.

What will happen to my progress in Wayfinder after the Echoes update?

After the Echoes update in Wayfinder, any previous progress will not carry over to the new build. The game is switching to an offline mode, removing online accounts and server checks, which means all progress has to be restarted.

Background information: Wayfinder is developed by Airship Syndicate, known for their previous work on games like Battle Chasers: Nightwar and Darksiders Genesis. They specialize in combining classic game design with modern mechanics. Wayfinder's unique approach to shifting away from the industry trend of live-service models indicates a dedication to creating long-lasting, player-oriented experiences. This move reflects a growing trend among gamers who prefer ownership and complete access to their games without the need for continuous investments.
