Warner Bros Misses Game Launch, Gaming Revenue Plummets 48%

May 12, 2025 3:48 PM

Warner Bros experienced a significant 48% drop in gaming revenue last quarter, attributed to the absence of game releases and the underperformance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The shortcomings of the game, including high expectations not being met and disappointing sales figures, combined with the cancellation of expansions for popular titles like Hogwarts Legacy, posed challenges for the company. Despite these setbacks in gaming, Warner Bros successfully launched a Minecraft movie, which emerged as the highest-grossing film of 2025 so far. The movie has grossed nearly $900 million globally, highlighting the studio’s winning streak in the film sector even as its gaming division struggles.

What happened to Warner Bros gaming revenue this quarter?

Warner Bros reported a 48% decline in gaming revenue due to a lack of new game releases and the underwhelming performance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, alongside the cancellation of expansions for existing titles.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, developed by Rocksteady, expands the universe established by the studio in the acclaimed Batman: Arkham series. However, the transition from the beloved Arkham style to a co-op shooter set in a wider open world was met with mixed reactions. Fans criticized the genre switch and the game's final chapter for feeling rushed, crashing expectations set by Rocksteady's prior success. Meanwhile, the upcoming return to single-player storytelling with a new Batman game hints at the developer's intention to return to its roots.

Honestly, Warner Bros’ gaming division is having a rough time, but at least their film side is absolutely crushing it with that Minecraft movie. Maybe they should let the devs take some notes from the movie team’s success. Kinda wild how Suicide Squad’s stumble overshadows Hogwarts Legacy’s momentum—guess even magic couldn’t save this quarter’s numbers.

Oof, Suicide Squad’s flop and no new game drops really hit Warner Bros hard—guess even the Joker wouldn’t laugh at a 48% revenue drop. At least the Minecraft movie’s killing it, so they’ve got that going for them Rocksteady’s pivot back to single-player Batman can’t come soon enough—maybe they’ll recapture that Arkham magic after the live-service stumble.
