Upcoming Strange Twists May Impact Assassins Creed's Meta Story Deeply

Oct 17, 2023 5:19 PM
Assassin's Creed's already intricate meta-story may soon become even more complex, according to Ryan Dinsdale's IGN article.

A dataminer uncovering a potential post-credits scene in Assassin's Creed Mirage points to a coming twist that adds further layers to the convoluted narrative. The dataminer, YouTube user Sliderv2, uploaded a video showing what they posit is a cut scene presumably setting the stage for the series' forthcoming release, Assassin's Creed Hexe.

Assassin's Creed Mirage carries minor links to the meta-story that interconnects the historical events in each game to a loosely related contemporary narrative. Interestingly, the alleged post-credits scene offers an entirely new direction. Typically, the Assassin's Creed franchise has only delved into two time frames: the past and the present. The teased scene, however, suggests narratives set in the distant future.

Within this scene, a conversation takes place between two Animus Operators (the Animus being the device that transports people's consciousness back in time) that refers to the 21st century as "ancient history." The scene becomes more intricate and somewhat eerie, showing Basim's eagle Enkidu soaring from Mirage's regular map into the desert towards a technological tower, suggesting a setting not necessarily in the distant past.

Although this scene was eventually removed from the game, it might signify that Ubisoft decided to drop this plot point, meaning it may not emerge in upcoming games at all. Regardless, the Assassin's Creed series appears to be experiencing a significant shift, with upcoming releases such as Hexe and the feudal Japan-set Assassin's Creed Red being presented under the new Assassin's Creed Infinity umbrella, a fresh platform acting as the series' hub.

Assassin's Creed Mirage launched on October 5 as a small-scale entry bringing players back to the franchise's roots through stealth-based gameplay. It deviates from the role-playing game components of Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla, and it only takes approximately 20 to 30 hours to complete, unlike its predecessors that demanded several dozen hours of playtime. IGN rated the game 8/10, commending its "back-to-basics approach" as a triumphant return to the series' original stealthy style.
