Switch Users Call Virtual Game Cards a Downgrade Amid Changes

Apr 30, 2025 11:12 AM

Nintendo Switch users are expressing dissatisfaction over the new Virtual Game Cards system, which has eliminated the ability to play the same digital game online across multiple consoles simultaneously. Previously, a primary console could share access to a digital game with a secondary console while both were online, but this loophole has been closed with the latest system update. Now, the only way to share games is offline or through a new Online Licenses option that requires users to play one game at a time on a single user account. While Nintendo informs users that they can utilize the Online Licenses option to play games offline, the new system has sparked a mixed reaction among gamers who feel it significantly restricts their game-sharing capabilities, especially with popular titles like Splatoon 3 and Animal Crossing. A GameShare feature for the upcoming Switch 2 aims to ease these restrictions for certain games but comes with its own limitations.

What changes have been made to the Nintendo Switch's game-sharing capabilities?

The new Virtual Game Cards system has removed the ability to play the same digital title online on two consoles at once, forcing users to utilize an Online Licenses option or play offline for game sharing. Only one accounted user can access the game online at a time.

The Nintendo Switch, launched in March 2017, has gained immense popularity for its hybrid design and extensive library of games. Its successor, the Switch 2, is set to release soon and aims to enhance the gaming experience with improved hardware and features. Fans eagerly await new functionalities while grappling with the implications of recent policy changes from Nintendo, impacting how digital titles can be shared among friends and family.

Nintendo’s new sharing rules feel like they’re playing a game of how much inconvenience can we add before fans revolt. Here’s hoping the Switch 2’s GameShare feature actually lives up to its name instead of just being another half-step solution.

Nintendo really out here making game-sharing feel like a limited-edition feature—guess they’re prepping us for the Switch 2’s improvements with a taste of the old-school DRM life. At least we’ll always have offline play, but man, sharing the joy just got a lot less joyful.
