Switch players baffled by missing feature in Nintendo World Championships

Jul 18, 2024 12:00 PM

Nintendo fans are expressing frustration over the newly released Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition for its lack of essential leaderboard features. This game, which digitally remasters classic NES titles like Super Mario Bros., offers players a chance to engage in various speedrunning challenges. However, the absence of a comprehensive friends leaderboard has disappointed many players who seek to compete directly with their friends. Instead, the game offers a weekly world ranking leaderboard, only viewable after the weekly event ends. Consequently, players are resorting to taking pictures of their screens to share times with friends, evoking nostalgia for older ways of recording high scores.

Why doesn't Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition have a friends leaderboard?n

The Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition only includes a weekly world ranking leaderboard that becomes viewable after the weekly event concludes, precluding real-time competition with friends. This design choice has led to criticism from players who feel that a friends leaderboard would significantly enhance the competitive experience.

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition is a nostalgic revamp of the classic 1990s Nintendo World Championships, a highly coveted game cartridge among collectors due to its rarity. This competition originally showcased speedrunning high scores across different NES games like Super Mario Bros., Rad Racer, and Tetris. The new edition aims to rekindle that competitive spirit but falls short due to its leaderboard limitations.

It's wild that Nintendo dropped the ball on such a key feature as a friends leaderboard. You'd think with all the hype around speedrunning and community competition, they'd make it easier for us to flex our high scores to our buddies
