Star Citizen, a space simulator game by Cloud Imperium Games (CIG), has announced that after over a decade of development, its single-player campaign, Squadron 42, is finally "feature complete." Squadron 42, part of the original Star Citizen Kickstarter campaign launched in 2012, was later separated from the main game to become a standalone story campaign. This part of the game saw multiple delays and long silent phases.
In 2015, CIG confirmed the engagement of a bevy of Hollywood stars including Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, and Gillian Anderson. Their participation was highlighted in flashy trailers portraying the talent in action, while other stars like Andy Serkis, Ben Mendelsohn, Mark Strong, Harry Treadway, Jack Huston, and John Rhys-Davies were all part of the project considered a spiritual successor to Chris Roberts' Wing Commander series.
11 years on, it appears that the completion of Squadron 42 is nearing without CIG officially announcing a release window. CIG stated that work towards the beta and release is now in progress. Furthermore, Star Citizen is infamous as one of the most contentious gaming projects, often labeled a scam by critics skeptical of its successful launch due to the costly in-game virtual space ships.
Yet, what stands undeniable is the staggering amount of money the project has amassed, with CIG disclosing the funding on its website. Currently, Star Citizen has raised over $616 million from more than 4.8 million accounts.
