Sony has announced the launch of its movie service app, Sony Pictures Core, for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. The app allows PlayStation users to buy or rent up to 2,000 Sony Pictures films, although the selection varies by region. Films available include Uncharted, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Bullet Train, and Ghostbusters: After Life.
The company didn't specify in which regions the app is available, but reports from users in the Netherlands indicate the availability of the app via the PlayStation Store's media section. PlayStation Plus Premium users will have free access to a curated selection of up to 100 films, which will be periodically updated.
Originally known as Bravia Core, the service was designed for watching movies on Bravia televisions and will be renamed Sony Pictures Core next year. Sony mentioned its plan to expand the app in the future, possibly including anime from Crunchyroll. However, it's worth mentioning that in specific regions like the UK, France, Germany, and Japan, some Sony Pictures films can only be bought through the app before they become available for rent.
In the comment section, some users acknowledged the high film quality, stating it requires a higher bandwidth (100mbps+). Other users, though, questioned the pricing strategy and argued the difference in quality wasn't significant enough to justify the cost.
