Sofia Coppola Speaks Out on Not Directing Last Twilight Movie - 'Too Strange'

Oct 25, 2023 10:36 PM

In recent news, Sofia Coppola, Academy Award-winning director, discussed why she declined to direct the final Twilight film, "Breaking Dawn - Part 2". In this conversation, she stated that while she found portions of Twilight interesting, the "imprinting" and "Renesmee" concepts were "too weird" for her.

Despite not embracing the Twilight franchise, Sophia mentions that she is open to exploring other genres and expresses interest in sci-fi and gothic horror. Having worked on films like "The Beguiled", her ability in capturing the haunting and eerie themes of these genres is solid.

The discussion also touched on Coppola's departure from the live-action adaptation of "The Little Mermaid". Conflicts over the film's budget, including a pivotal moment involving a boardroom question was "What’s gonna get the 35-year-old man in the audience?", led to her resignation from the project.

These experiences shed light on the ongoing challenges of being a female filmmaker, where creative and financial decisions often clash with the predominantly male perspective of industry financiers. However, undeterred, Coppola continues to express her creativity and look forward to future projects that align with her vision.

Her next feature, "Priscilla", a docudrama about the relationship between Priscilla and Elvis Presley, is slated to release on November 3rd, 2023.
