In recent news, the developer of Cities Skylines 2, Colossal Order, has revealed that the game is targeted to achieve 30 frames per second (FPS) even on high-end gaming PCs.
The confirmation came during a Reddit AMA when the chief technical officer of Colossal Order, known as "damsku", asserted that there is arguably no real advantage of higher FPS for the city builder genre. Damsku emphasized that the focus, instead, should be on avoiding stutters and ensuring a responsive user interface.
Earlier this month, the company acknowledged that the performance of Cities Skylines 2 fell short of expectations, yet confirmed that the launch of the city builder on PC would proceed as planned on October 24. Colossal Order also stated the game is a next-generation title requiring high-end hardware for top performance.
n“Cities: Skylines 2 is a next-gen title, and naturally, it demands specific hardware requirements,” said Colossal Order, adding that despite their team's diligent efforts, they hadn't achieved their targeted benchmark. In a supplemental note released to the press, the company explained: “Colossal Order and Paradox are fully aware that Cities: Skylines 2 requires high-end hardware for top-end performance, and they want to make sure that players are aware of this as well."
With the imminent launch of Cities Skylines 2, concerns persist about possible performance issues across even the most powerful PCs. The company, however, assured that it would not stop or limit optimization work once they achieve a 30fps rate on recommended hardware. They believe setting a 60fps target would not yield long term benefits due to the rendering challenges from both close and distant angles.
nNotably, City Skylines 2 has received mixed reviews. IGN’s review gave the game a 6/10, stating: “Cities: Skylines 2 is an ambitious sequel that might have bitten off more than it can chew – be prepared to do a lot of terraforming if you don't want your metropolis to look like a nightmare.”
To compensate for a delayed PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S launch from the originally projected October date to Spring 2024, Colossal Order and Paradox issued refunds to those who pre-ordered the game.
