In response to Microsoft's $69 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard, questions have circulated as to whether Sony needs to respond with more acquisitions of its own. Sony Interactive Entertainment business executive, Eric Lempel, in an interview with CNBC, made it clear that Sony's focus lies on creating great content and partnering with new prospects, without necessarily buying them outright.

Although Sony's PlayStation 5 is thriving and its first-party games are breaking sales records, Sony doesn't possess the funds to match Microsoft's recent acquisition. However, Sony has made major purchases in recent years, acquiring Destiny maker Bungie for $3.6 billion and Spider-Man 2 developer Insomniac for $229 million.

Lempel confirmed Sony's perpetual search for new collaborations and noted an increase in mergers and acquisitions over the past decade. Recent additions include PC port specialist Nixxes, Returnal developer Housemarque, VR developer Firesprite, remasters and remakes studio Bluepoint Games, Fairgame$ developer Haven Studios, and most recently, Firewalk Studios.

While speculation persists about Sony's acquisition strategy, there is equal curiosity about Microsoft's future moves in the gaming industry.
