Seth Rogen Reveals Sony Banned Jonah Hill from PS in Superbad Scene

Mar 13, 2025 4:34 PM

Seth Rogen recently revealed that Sony requested Jonah Hill's character in the comedy film Superbad not to touch a PlayStation during a video game scene due to concerns about the character's negative portrayal. Rogen reminisced about the filming at the South by Southwest 2025 festival, highlighting how Sony deemed Hill's character too "reprehensible" to interact with their gaming product. As a workaround, Michael Cera's character was featured playing The Getaway: Black Monday instead, although humorously, the game does not even include the M16 rifle mentioned in the scene. Rogen co-wrote Superbad, which went on to become a generational comedy classic.

Why did Sony forbid Jonah Hill from touching a PlayStation in Superbad?

Sony found Jonah Hill's character Seth too reprehensible, leading them to insist that he not interact with their product during the film's production.

Superbad, released in 2007, has become a cult classic known for its humorous take on teenage life and friendships. Co-written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the film features a star-studded cast including Michael Cera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Emma Stone. Its iconic moments and dialogues have resonated with audiences, ensuring its place in modern comedy history.

It’s hilarious how Sony drew the line at a reprehensible character touching a PlayStation but didn’t bat an eye at *The Getaway: Black Monday* getting a random shoutout. Just goes to show how weirdly specific brand protection can be, even in a movie that’s all about gloriously messy teenage chaos.

It's wild to think that Sony was so protective of their brand image that they didn't want a fictional character touching a PlayStation, yet they were cool with *The Getaway: Black Monday* getting some screen time. Classic corporate overthinking, but hey, at least it gave us another quirky layer to Superbad's already legendary charm.
