Scarlett Johansson Slams Oscars for Ignoring Avengers: Endgame

May 14, 2025 4:33 PM

Scarlett Johansson recently expressed her confusion over why Avengers: Endgame received only one Oscar nomination for visual effects despite its massive success and critical acclaim. In an interview with Vanity Fair, she described the film as “an impossible movie that should not have worked,” yet managed to resonate with audiences. She also noted the Academy's historical reluctance to recognize superhero films, with the only Marvel film having been nominated for an Academy Award being 2018’s Black Panther. Although Johansson’s portrayal of Black Widow has been pivotal in the MCU, she doubts she will return to the role, feeling that her character's story is complete and should remain untouched.

Why didn’t Avengers: Endgame receive more Oscar nominations?

Avengers: Endgame did not receive more Oscar nominations primarily due to the Academy's historical biases against superhero films and genre entertainment, often favoring traditional dramas and narratives over blockbusters.

Avengers: Endgame, released in 2019, is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and serves as a culmination of several years and numerous films within this expansive franchise. The film is celebrated for its storytelling, character arcs, and action sequences, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of all time. Johansson's portrayal of Natasha Romanoff, also known as Black Widow, has been a significant part of the MCU since her introduction in Iron Man in 2010, which adds to the emotional weight of her character's journey in Endgame.
