The PlayStation 5, which is now three years old, is becoming more readily available after years of scarcity. At the same time, there's ongoing speculation about a new PlayStation 5 model, often called the PlayStation 5 Pro or PlayStation 5 Slim. Currently, Sony has not announced any plans for a new PlayStation 5 model, meaning that the regular PlayStation 5 is expected to stay on the market for a while longer.
However, recent rumors suggest developments beyond just the PlayStation 5 Pro. Journalist Tom Henderson from Insider Gaming speculates Sony may be working on the PlayStation 6. There's also a possibility of a new model featuring a detachable disk drive being released this year. Though the official release date of the new PlayStation 5 model has not been confirmed, some rumors point to the possibility of a 'PlayStation 5 Pro' being available for purchase from 2023 or 2024.
Sony has unveiled two smaller PlayStation 5 models on October 11, 2023, with detachable disk drives. Just like the original console from 2020, two variants are available: one with a disk drive for €549.99 and one without for €449.99. The new models come with a 1TB SSD, more than the 825GB in the older model.
Sony is rumored to be working on a handheld accessory, the Q-Lite, which doesn’t play games itself but streams via Remote Play on PS5. Expected to be released by the end of 2023, the Q-lite requires a constant internet connection and, of course, a PlayStation 5.
Little has been confirmed about the PlayStation 5 Pro hardware, but RedGamingTech suggests it will feature shorter load times, improved ray-tracing, and AI-upscaling. There's more speculation about the PlayStation 5 with an external disk drive, including its thinner and lighter body, and seamless operation during tests.
As the PlayStation 5 Pro has not been announced yet, the cost is unknown. The PlayStation 5 received a price increase last year, making it €550 for the console with a disk drive. By rough estimation, the PlayStation 5 Pro may be priced between €600 and €650.
Sony promises 2023 will be a big year for the PlayStation 5, with several games scheduled for release. These, and other games, are likely to also be available on the new console when it's released.
As of yet, there are no confirmed reports, and all these are merely speculation and rumors.
