overwatch 6v6 mode might return, but there's a huge catch

Jul 25, 2024 6:00 PM

Blizzard Entertainment is exploring the potential return of 6v6 matchups in Overwatch 2, according to game director Aaron Keller. Despite the original change to a 5v5 format aiming to create a more balanced and streamlined gameplay experience, player demand for the 6v6 format has persisted. While reintroducing 6v6 involves significant technical challenges and potential impacts on game performance, Keller assured that Blizzard plans to test various configurations of 6v6 and gauge community interest over time. The return effort is part of ongoing adjustments and will take several seasons to fully evaluate.

Why did Overwatch 2 switch to 5v5?

The switch to 5v5 in Overwatch 2 was intended to reduce battlefield clutter, provide a cleaner gameplay experience, and lead to shorter queue times. Blizzard aimed to create more manageable gameplay with fewer players per match across the Tank, Damage, and Support roles.

Overwatch, launched in 2016, has undergone numerous changes in its gameplay modes, including the original 6v6 format, which was replaced by 5v5 in the 2022 free-to-play sequel, Overwatch 2. This change was part of Blizzard’s efforts to streamline the game for better role-based play and quicker matchmaking times. However, community nostalgia and preference for the original format have kept the discussion for a 6v6 return alive.
