According to an interview with Touch Arcade, Obsidian Entertainment's design director Josh Sawyer has expressed his ambition to work on "Pillars of Eternity 3" if he were to have a budget equivalent to that of "Baldur's Gate 3". "If I had an unlimited budget, I would make Pillars of Eternity 3," said Sawyer. The budget for the preceding title, "Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire", was relatively low, and having a budget at par with "Baldur's Gate 3" would propel the development of "Pillars 3."

In response to queries about the prospect of working on "Pentiment 2" or "Fallout: New Vegas 2", Sawyer shared he feels fulfilled with the game "Pentiment" and would not rush to make a sequel. Obsidian, presently a Microsoft studio, is also working on a sequel to "The Outer Worlds" and "Avowed", a first-person role-playing game set in the same universe as "Pillars of Eternity".
