Obsidian's Spy RPG Alpha Protocol Resurrected 5 Years Later

Mar 20, 2024 3:11 PM

Returning from digital obscurity, Obsidian Entertainment's espionage RPG "Alpha Protocol" is once again available as GOG revives the game five years post delisting. Launched in 2010 and removed from Steam in 2019 due to expired music rights issues, key features such as "Turn Up The Radio" by Autograph are intact in this DRM-free release. Enhanced for modern systems, the GOG version supports achievements, full controller compatibility (including Dualsense and Xbox Series controllers), multiple languages, and cloud saves.

Alpha Protocol, developed concurrently with the acclaimed Fallout: New Vegas, features a dialogue-driven narrative where players control secret agent Michael Thorton to thwart a global threat. Despite innovative mechanics and setting, the game's underperformance led to Sega scrapping plans for a sequel. The return of "Alpha Protocol" offers both new players and fans the complete experience, including its character-driven story and immersive espionage gameplay.

What additional features does the GOG version of Alpha Protocol include?

The GOG version of Alpha Protocol includes a licensed soundtrack, achievements support, full controller support for a range of controllers, localization support for multiple languages, and cloud saves compatibility.

Alpha Protocol carved a niche for itself in the action RPG genre by offering players the freedom to navigate the narrative through choices that genuinely affected the game's outcome, much like Obsidian's other role-playing games. While it might not have been a commercial success, it garnered a cult following, and its intricate narrative and choice mechanics have since been praised and influenced game design in the RPG space.
