NO MORE Baldur's Gate 4 or BG3 Expansions from Larian

Mar 21, 2024 6:53 PM

In a significant turn of events, Larian Studios has announced they will not be working on any expansions for Baldur's Gate 3, nor will they be developing Baldur's Gate 4. This news came straight from Larian's CEO Swen Vincke during a talk at GDC 2024. Vincke explained that the company's nature and ambition don't align with creating DLCs or expansions, despite past attempts. Larian Studios is known for propelling the RPG genre forward with their games, and while Baldur's Gate 3 holds a special place in their history, the team is eager to move on to new projects. The decision to not continue with the Baldur's Gate series will leave future developments to Wizards of the Coast, the owner of the Dungeons & Dragons IP.

What will Larian Studios work on next after Baldur's Gate 3?

Larian Studios has hinted at moving away from the Dungeons & Dragons universe and will start working on a completely new project, though specific details have not yet been revealed.

Baldur's Gate 3, developed by Larian Studios, is a significant entry in the role-playing game (RPG) genre and part of the historic Baldur's Gate series, which is set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. Lauded for its rich storytelling, deep gameplay mechanics, and strong adherence to D&D rulesets, the game was highly anticipated before its release. With the first Baldur's Gate launched in 1998, the series has had a profound impact on the evolution of RPGs. Larian's decision to not continue the series expresses their intent to innovate further and potentially create new worlds and game experiences for players.
