Nintendo Switch 2 Only Supports VRR in Handheld Mode

May 16, 2025 5:18 PM

Nintendo has clarified the functionality of variable refresh rate (VRR) support on the Nintendo Switch 2, announcing it will only be available in handheld mode. The initial information suggesting VRR would also work in docked mode was published in error. Currently, there are no plans for a firmware update to enable VRR for television use. While this has disappointed many fans, there is hope since similar updates were rolled out to other consoles like the PS5 after launch. In related news, Nintendo has also revealed a list of games receiving free performance upgrades for the Switch 2, ensuring players some enhanced experiences at launch. Doug Bowser, President of Nintendo of America, has assured that there will be sufficient Switch 2 units to meet holiday demand.

Will the Switch 2 get VRR support for docked mode in the future?

As of now, Nintendo has not announced any plans to enable VRR support for docked mode on the Switch 2. However, the possibility remains open for future firmware updates similar to what occurred with the PS5.

The Nintendo Switch 2, the successor to the immensely popular Nintendo Switch, is set to revolutionize portable gaming while bringing enhanced performance. It aims to build on the success of its predecessor while addressing some limitations, making it one of the most anticipated consoles in the market. The introduction of VRR, however limited at launch, indicates Nintendo's commitment to evolving gameplay quality.
