Nintendo Switch 1 Aims to Top Sales but Misses PS2 Record

May 08, 2025 9:11 AM

Nintendo is forecasting a strong sales year for its original Switch, expecting to sell an additional 4.5 million units in 2025, bringing total sales to approximately 156.62 million. This would make the Switch Nintendo's best-selling hardware, surpassing the Nintendo DS's record of 154.02 million. However, it may fall short of the all-time console sales record held by the PlayStation 2, which sold an estimated 160 million units. There are concerns that the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 might impact sales momentum for the original model, as Nintendo anticipates that the Switch 2 will also perform well, aiming to sell around 15 million units in its first year despite possible tariffs affecting demand.

Will the Nintendo Switch 1 surpass the PlayStation 2 in sales?

While Nintendo aims for the Switch 1 to reach impressive sales figures, it is unlikely to surpass the PlayStation 2's estimated 160 million units unless sales remain robust after the launch of Switch 2.

The Nintendo Switch, first launched in March 2017, has become a beloved hybrid console, offering both handheld and docked play. Its unique design and exclusive titles, such as 'The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild' and 'Animal Crossing: New Horizons,' have significantly contributed to its appeal, resulting in a strong player base worldwide. As Nintendo prepares to release the successor, the Switch 2, fans are eager to see how it will evolve the gaming experience further while maintaining the legacy of the original Switch.
