Nintendo Reveals Switch 2 Will Not Support VRR on TV

May 16, 2025 3:33 PM

Nintendo has clarified that the upcoming Switch 2 will not support Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) while docked, contrary to earlier indications. The company confirmed that VRR will only be available when using the console in handheld mode. This clarification comes after a previously published, now-removed statement misled consumers about VRR capabilities while connected to TVs. Nintendo apologized for the confusion and stated there are currently no plans to update support for VRR over HDMI in the future. Reports from Digital Foundry have indicated that VRR functionalities are only part of the internal display and not available through HDMI.

Will the Switch 2 support VRR in docked mode in the future?

Nintendo has not confirmed any upcoming support for VRR in docked mode, stating that there are no announcements at the moment regarding potential updates for this feature.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is the anticipated successor to the widely popular Nintendo Switch, which revolutionized portable gaming. With its unique hybrid design allowing for both handheld and TV play, Nintendo has set high expectations among gamers. Experts predict that the Switch 2 could sell over 100 million units in its first five years, solidifying Nintendo’s position in the next console generation. As the company aims to enhance gaming experiences, fans are eager for the device's full specifications and capabilities following the earlier confusion regarding its VRR support.

Interesting that Nintendo’s doubling down on handheld-first features—feels like they’re leaning into their portable roots while keeping TV play simple. Wonder if this’ll push more players toward handheld mode or if third-party docks might find a workaround.

Bummer about the docked VRR support, but at least handheld mode gets some love—guess Nintendo’s keeping that hybrid magic alive. Still, kinda curious if they’ll change their stance down the line when the Switch 2 hype train really gets rolling.
