New Smurfs Movie Trailer Drops: Art's Fresh, But Is It Stale

Feb 06, 2025 3:09 PM

A new live-action and animation hybrid Smurfs movie is set to release on July 18, 2025, but early reactions to its first trailer are lukewarm at best. The franchise, which has seen multiple adaptations, returns with a budget that is expected to be higher this time. Although the movie features a talented voice cast including Rihanna as Smurfette and John Goodman as Papa Smurf, the initial impression points towards a generic storyline lacking originality. The film's marketing, led by Rihanna, does show some promising visual updates for the Smurfs characters, yet many feel it ultimately rehashes familiar themes of previous adaptations, with the beloved blue characters being dragged into the mundane world of humans once again. The competition at the box office will be stiff, with other major films debuting close to the Smurfs release date.

Will the new Smurfs movie be worth watching?

The new Smurfs movie may appeal to families for a harmless outing but lacks originality noticed in past adaptations, leaving some early reviewers skeptical about its overall quality and potential box office success.

The Smurfs brand originated from a Belgian comic series created by Peyo in the late 1950s, gaining immense popularity through animated TV shows and several film adaptations. This upcoming film aims to revitalizing the franchise yet a continuing concern remains about whether it can capture the imagination of both older fans and new audiences while competing with blockbusters like Jurassic World: Rebirth and others. The franchise's past struggles with box office performance highlight a need for a refreshing narrative rather than relying on a formulaic approach.

Honestly, I’m all for nostalgic reboots, but this Smurfs movie feels like it’s banking more on star power than a fresh take. If they’re going to drag the Smurfs back into the human world again, at least give us a story that doesn’t feel like it’s been smurfed to death already.

It’s tough to get excited about yet another Smurfs reboot when it feels like the franchise is stuck in a loop of rehashing the same old formula. While Rihanna and John Goodman’s involvement adds some star power, it might not be enough to breathe fresh life into a story that’s already been told too many times.
