May 14, 2025 10:23 AM

NBCUniversal has revealed some initial details for the sequel to the Super Mario Bros. Movie, including a potential title, Super Mario World, which was briefly mentioned in a press release before being removed. This sequel is set to be released on April 3, 2026 in the US and April 24, 2026 in Japan. The original film performed exceedingly well at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing film based on a video game, with earnings exceeding $1.36 billion. Fans are eagerly awaiting an official confirmation and reveal from Nintendo, potentially through a dedicated Direct event.

What is the release date for the next Super Mario movie?

The next Super Mario movie is scheduled for release on April 3, 2026 in the US and April 24, 2026 in Japan.

The Super Mario franchise has a long-standing legacy in gaming, beginning with the release of Super Mario Bros. in 1985. The series has evolved over the years, introducing players to a wide array of characters and worlds, leading to its first animated movie in 2023. Given its massive popularity, the anticipation for the sequel is significant, especially considering the nostalgia associated with titles like Super Mario World, which debuted on the SNES in 1990.

A Super Mario World movie could be the perfect excuse to finally give Yoshi the spotlight he deserves—just don’t skimp on the dinosaur chaos. 2026’s a bit of a wait, but hey, at least we’ll have plenty of time to replay the SNES classic for hype.

Super Mario World as a title would be a killer nod to the SNES classic—hope they bring back Yoshi’s Island vibes Either way, 2026 can’t come soon enough for more Mario mayhem. April 2026 feels ages away, but if the sequel’s even half as fun as the first movie, it’ll be worth the wait. Wonder if we’ll get a Luigi’s Mansion tease too
