Mortal Kombat Modder: Warner Bros. Threatens My YouTube

May 23, 2024 9:52 AM

A well-known Mortal Kombat 1 modder on YouTube, Toasted, has taken down his content after Warner Bros. issued an intellectual property infringement notification, threatening to delete his channel. Warner Bros. owns Mortal Kombat and has asked for the removal of all mod videos from Toasted's YouTube and Patreon. Toasted's mods featured characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and other franchises, garnering over a billion views. Despite previous support from NetherRealm's Ed Boon, Toasted claims he had no option but to comply with the cease and desist, though he plans to contest the decision.

Why did Warner Bros. request the removal of Mortal Kombat 1 mods from Toasted’s channel?n

Warner Bros. issued the request because the mods allegedly infringed on their intellectual property rights, and they threatened to issue copyright strikes if the videos were not removed.

Mortal Kombat 1, developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, is known for its intense and graphic gameplay. The series has a long history dating back to the 1990s, becoming iconic for its brutal fighting mechanics and fatality moves. Mods have historically been popular within the gaming community, allowing for enhanced creativity and extended content, but they can occasionally clash with legal boundaries set by game developers and publishers.
