LA Billboard Teases More Game Studio Tributes Pre-Showcases

Jun 07, 2024 1:13 PM

New Blood Interactive has put up an electronic billboard in downtown LA to honor several "gone but not forgotten" game studios ahead of major summer showcases. The billboard, spotted by Stephen Totilo, lists studios like Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, Roll7, and more, all of which closed in 2024. It serves as a tribute following numerous industry layoffs and shut-downs, with the message "We love you. We miss you. We hate money" displayed prominently. The closures, by major players like Microsoft and Sony, have sparked outrage and sadness within the gaming community.

Why were these gaming studios shut down?n

The closures were largely due to financial decisions. Microsoft closed Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, and others to prioritize different projects despite posting a profit. Conversely, Take-Two Interactive and Embracer Group made similar decisions to shut down their indie labels and less profitable studios. Sony shut down its London Studio amid significant layoffs affecting 900 staff in March 2024.

One of the highlighted studios, Arkane Austin, was known for developing 'Redfall,' a game that generated significant buzz before its closure. Tango Gameworks, famous for 'Hi-Fi Rush' and 'Ghostwire Tokyo,' also faced a shutdown by Microsoft. These closures are reflective of a broader industry trend where financial priorities often lead to tough decisions regarding beloved game developers.

It's both heartwarming and heartbreaking to see New Blood Interactive's billboard; it's a powerful reminder of the talent we've lost due to corporate reshuffling. Here's hoping that the legacy and creative spirit of these studios continue to inspire future developers.

It's a bummer to see such creative powerhouses getting shut down, especially when they're producing games that captivate so many players. Hopefully, this billboard serves as a wake-up call to prioritize the artistic value and community impact of gaming over sheer profitability.

Man, it's bittersweet seeing those studios honored like that. It's a stark reminder of how the industry’s financial tides can sink even the most beloved developers.
