Grand Theft Auto 5 sold 190 million times

Nov 09, 2023 10:18 AM

Grand Theft Auto 5 has reached a staggering 190 million units sold, according to a recent disclosure by Take-Two Interactive. This milestone was touched upon during the company's presentation of its quarterly financial results, where they also highlighted an increase of 5 million in sales since August. As a series, GTA has sold over 410 million copies worldwide.

During the presentation, it was emphasized that the much-anticipated sequel, tentatively referred to as Grand Theft Auto 6, is making good progress. A debut trailer for the game is expected by early December. While no exact release date has been provided, Take-Two anticipates a rise in revenue for the fiscal year starting April 1, 2024, through March 31, 2025, hinting that GTA 6 may launch within that timeframe.

Moreover, Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, spoke optimistically about employing artificial intelligence to enhance interactions with non-playable characters (NPCs) in games, raising the possibility that AI could make these characters more interesting and fun. There was no direct confirmation of AI's use in GTA 6, but the prospect was discussed in regards to future gaming experiences.

The success story extends beyond GTA, as the Red Dead Redemption series sales data were also shared. The second installment has surpassed 57 million copies, contributing to over 81 million sales for the entire franchise.
