God of War, Horizon show scripts in the works

Jan 10, 2024 2:10 PM

The upcoming television series adaptations for the hit PlayStation franchises "God of War" and "Horizon" are progressing with scripts currently being written. Sony confirmed during CES 2024 that writing is underway, with "God of War" heading to Prime Video and "Horizon" (based on "Horizon Zero Dawn") slated for Netflix. Sony Pictures Television Studios director Katherine Pope expressed excitement over the development of these series. The "God of War" series is expected to explore the father-son relationship central to the latest games, while "Horizon" will feature Aloy as the protagonist. Sony's move to adapt its gaming franchises into films and series follows previous projects like "The Last of Us" and "Twisted Metal," in addition to movies like "Uncharted" and the upcoming "Gran Turismo." Films based on "Ghost of Tsushima" and "Gravity Rush" are also in the pipeline, with the latter recently releasing its first images.

What will the "God of War" and "Horizon" series focus on in their narratives?
nThe "God of War" series is expected to delve into the dynamics of the father-son relationship, likely drawing from the storyline of the recent games. The "Horizon" series will feature Aloy as its central character, possibly exploring the post-apocalyptic world and the mysteries of the robot dinosaurs introduced in "Horizon Zero Dawn."

God of War and Horizon have become iconic franchises within the gaming industry since their respective releases. "God of War," known for its intense combat and deep narrative based on ancient mythology, has had several titles with the most recent being "God of War Ragnarok." "Horizon Zero Dawn," developed by Guerrilla Games and followed by "Horizon Forbidden West," presents a unique blend of primitive and futuristic elements where humans coexist with mechanical creatures. These adaptations mark another step in Sony's broader strategy to merge interactive entertainment with film and television, expanding the reach and influence of their most beloved gaming IPs.

It's fantastic to see Sony really leaning into the storytelling potential of their gaming IPs; if they nail the depth and complexity of God of War's mythology and Horizon's world-building, these series might just capture the essence of what made the games so mesmerizing. With the right balance of loyalty to the source material and creative liberties, we could be looking at the dawn of a new era where video game narratives are as celebrated on screen as they are on console.

Totally stoked to see how they'll bring the intricate worlds of both God of War and Horizon to the small screen—especially with the emotional depth of Kratos' journey as a father and Aloy's epic quest through a techno-primitive landscape. If Sony nails the storytelling and aesthetic like they did in The Last of Us, these series could be the next binge-worthy hits for gamers and non-gamers alike.
