"Freddy's Five Nights Marked Peacock's Most Successful Five Day Launch"

Nov 01, 2023 12:50 AM

Five Nights at Freddy’s, the new horror film based on the popular video game, has achieved the highest five-day debut of any title on streaming platform Peacock, according to a press release from Universal Pictures. The film also premiered in theaters securing a global opening of $132.7 million, the biggest horror film opening of 2023. Of this total, $80 million came from domestic theatergoers alone, equaling Marvel Studio’s Black Widow for the largest-ever opening for a day-and-date release. The movie has already recouped its production costs, outperforming expectations despite being simultaneously available on a streaming platform.

The film, adapted from the point-and-click survival game developed by Scott Cawthon in 2014, was also the biggest Blumhouse opening to date, surpassing 2018’s Halloween reboot. In the movie, protagonist and overnight security guard Mike (Josh Hutcherson) is forced to confront hidden terrors in an abandoned theme restaurant inhabited by a team of animatronic antagonists, aided by a local police officer (Elizabeth Lail).

Despite Peacock’s smaller subscriber base compared to competitors like Netflix and Disney+, the film’s simultaneous release did not negatively impact its box office performance. This achievement serves as an informative data point as film studios continue to experiment with release strategies in a post-COVID-19 landscape.
