Gamers interested in espionage thrillers and Rockstar Games titles may be intrigued by new details emerging about the canceled game "Agent." Initially announced as a PlayStation 3 exclusive back in 2009, technical director Obbe Vermeij reveals that "Agent" faced developmental issues due to resources being redirected to Grand Theft Auto 5. Intended as a gritty 70s spy adventure with levels across various global hotspots, the game could have offered an alternative take on the James Bond archetype.
Rockstar North, the Scotland-based studio famous for their work on Grand Theft Auto, conceptualized exciting sequences for "Agent," including ski chases and possibly a space shootout inspired by classic 007 movies. However, the urgency of supporting Grand Theft Auto titles led to "Agent" being handed off to another studio and ultimately shelved. The project remains officially uncancelled, but with its website gone and trademarks lapsed, its future looks bleak.
Meanwhile, fans of the genre can look forward to a 007 game under development by Hitman creators IO Interactive. And as the gaming world anticipates the next big release from Rockstar with a reveal trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 slated for early December 2023, "Agent" stands as a fascinating footnote in the studio's storied history.
