Final Fantasy 6 remake takes double the time of FF7

Jan 29, 2024 3:25 PM

In recent news, it's been disclosed by Square Enix that a potential remake of the classic RPG Final Fantasy 6 would require double the development time compared to the ongoing Final Fantasy 7 Remake project. Yoshinori Kitase, the producer of FF7 Remake, mentioned in an interview that Final Fantasy 7's remake has been in development for a decade and its second installment is yet to be released, signaling that the project's completion is still a way off. Kitase pointed out that the vast number of characters in Final Fantasy 6 would contribute to the increased development time. Despite enthusiasm within Square Enix for a FF6 remake, it appears unlikely to happen soon. The company is supposedly focusing on the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy and possibly a remake of Final Fantasy 9, as suggested by gaming journalist Jeff Grubb. For now, fans are eager for the next release in the series, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, scheduled for PlayStation 5 on February 29.

Is there a Final Fantasy 6 remake in development?
No, currently there is no confirmed development for a Final Fantasy 6 remake. Instead, Square Enix is focused on the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project and potentially a remake of Final Fantasy 9.

Final Fantasy 6, originally released in 1994 for the SNES, is renowned as one of the most influential JRPGs of its time and is often praised for its epic narrative and depth of characters. Despite not being initially released in Europe, subsequent versions on platforms like the PlayStation, Game Boy Advance, and smartphones have made it accessible worldwide. Its legacy among fans is strong, and the desire for a remake reflects the game's enduring status in the realm of RPGs.
