Fan-Favorite Mods Let You Ditch Fallout 4's Next-Gen Update

Apr 29, 2024 11:22 AM

The much-anticipated next-gen update for Fallout 4 has caused quite a stir in the gaming community, but perhaps not for the reasons Bethesda might have hoped. Following the release of the update, which aimed to enhance the game's performance and visuals for modern consoles, players have encountered various issues, leading to an interesting development on the modding front. Notably, the update has led to compatibility problems with many beloved mods, frustrating PC players who have heavily modded versions of the game.

Consequently, two particular mods have surged in popularity on Nexus Mods – both designed to revert Fallout 4 back to its state before the next-gen update. Bilago's 'STEAM - Skip Next-Gen update' and Zerratar's 'Fallout 4 Downgrader' amassed over 20,000 downloads in just a few days by offering solutions to bypass or roll back the update. While the former tricks Steam into thinking the game is up to date without the next-gen enhancements, the latter allows a full revert to the pre-update version with an automated process – albeit with the potential security risk of requiring Steam login credentials, a point addressed by the mod creator assuring users of the login's sole purpose.

As modders adjust to the new update, updates to some of the community's favorite tools like the Fallout 4 Script Extender are already in progress. However, it's not all bad news; fans eagerly awaiting the ambitious Fallout: London mod should rest assured that despite a setback caused by the next-gen update, the release is still on the horizon.

What are the Fallout 4 next-gen update improvements, and why are players reverting back?

The next-gen update for Fallout 4 aimed to improve the game's graphics and performance on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. However, players are reverting back because the update has led to issues with mod compatibility, prompting them to use mods like 'STEAM - Skip Next-Gen update' and 'Fallout 4 Downgrader' to keep playing with their existing mods on PC.

Fallout 4, released by Bethesda Game Studios in November 2015, is an action RPG set in a post-apocalyptic open world. The game's extensive modding community has significantly extended its longevity, with players creating and sharing modifications that range from small quality-of-life improvements to substantial content additions. This extensive modding capability, combined with the game's critical acclaim and commercial success, ensures its continued relevance in the gaming community years after its initial release.
