New 'MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE' film in the works at Amazon with 'BUMBLEBEE' director

May 02, 2024 3:08 PM

The long-awaited Masters of the Universe live-action movie, which seemed to be stuck in development hell, is finally gearing up for production. Amazon MGM Studios teamed up with toy company Mattel for this new project, setting a release date for June 5, 2026. The film will be directed by Travis Knight, known for his acclaimed work on Bumblebee and Kubo and the Two Strings. Chris Butler, who worked on ParaNorman and Kubo and the Two Strings, is penning the script. This adaptation follows a young Prince Adam who discovers his destiny as He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe, after being separated from his magical Power Sword during a crash landing on Earth. The narrative will not be connected to Netflix’s recent animated sequel series. Casting decisions are still under wraps, but anticipation is high for a Summer 2026 blockbuster release.

Is the new Masters of the Universe movie connected to any previous adaptations?

No, the upcoming Masters of the Universe film from Mattel Films and Amazon MGM Studios will not be tied to Netflix's animated sequel series or any other past adaptations.

The Masters of the Universe franchise, based on the Mattel toy line, has had a long and varied history in pop culture. Originating in the early 1980s with a successful line of action figures, it quickly expanded to include an animated TV series, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, that became a formative piece of 80s children's entertainment. The franchise has experienced various revivals throughout the years, including several animated series reboots and a 1987 live-action film starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man. The legacy of the franchise is marked by its iconic characters such as He-Man, Skeletor, and She-Ra, as well as its fantasy sci-fi blended setting of Eternia. Fans of the franchise have been eagerly awaiting a successful cinematic revival to bring the nostalgic and imaginative world of He-Man back to the big screen.
