Bethesda's Pre-Launch Confidence Contributed to Fallout 76's Problematic Start, Says Ex-Designer
Bethesda's former design director, Bruce Nesmith, stated in a recent interview with MinnMax that the game development firm wrongly thought it was incapable of failure before the catastrophic launch of Fallout 76. Nesmith, who served in significant roles for releases such as the Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, Fallout 3 and 4, as well as Starfield, left Bethesda in 2021.
"Bethesda began to convince itself that it was infallible. It believed there was nothing it couldn't accomplish. Clearly, that was an error," Nesmith said. He explained the origins of this overconfidence: Given the industry-wide recognition and "game of the year" accolades granted to preceding releases like Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, Fallout 3, Skyrim, and Fallout 4, the company started believing that it could surmount any game development challenge thrown at it.
Nesmith also addressed the specific process and choices that led to Fallout 76's launch issues. The company's principal focus was misguided, observed Nesmith, leading to a flawed introduction into the market. The decision to include multiplayer elements, a first for the developer, came from player feedback and not executive pressure. However, the team did not fully grasp the complexities of developing a multiplayer game.
"Fallout 76 was a challenge for me to accept," he said. "It's not merely a matter of incorporating multiplayer elements. As it transpired, it involved much more than that."
Despite its early missteps, Fallout 76 has experienced a resurgence as Bethesda has continued to provide regular updates and expansions. Looking forward, though, fans waiting for the next single-player Fallout game will need to stay patient, as Bethesda executive director Todd Howard confirmed that Fallout 5 won't be released until after The Elder Scrolls 6, which isn't due before 2028. This timeline suggests that Fallout 5 might see a release in the early to mid-2030s.
