Renowned director Edgar Wright has revealed that he was offered a chance to direct an X-Men movie based on the character Gambit, but turned down the opportunity due to not being familiar with the character. During an interview with /Film, Wright - known for directing "Hot Fuzz" and "Shaun of the Dead" - mentioned that the offer was made by producer Simon Kinberg, who had been eager to work with Wright for some time. Wright's involvement in the X-Men universe has been low-key, despite having initially signed up to direct Ant-Man. Ultimately, the Gambit project which was supposed to feature actor Channing Tatum, was cancelled before commencement of filming due to several delays and Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox.
Reid Carolin, who was lined up to be the film’s director, has expressed hope for the project's revival someday, stating that Tatum was perfect for the role. Carolin mentioned that as long as the character Deadpool continues to be prominent, additional characters could be introduced into the universe.
