Denuvo Introduces New Tech for Enhanced Leak Tracking

Mar 18, 2024 3:43 PM

At the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2024, Irdeto introduced TraceMark for Games, a new watermarking technology aiming to protect game developers against leaks. This tool allows the addition of a unique ID to game files, enabling developers to trace any leaks back to their original source. TraceMark for Games features both visible and invisible watermarking, with the latter allowing for covert marking of games to catch leakers unaware. It is crafted to safeguard games, especially during pre-release phases like beta testing or when distributing review copies. Irdeto promises enhanced security when used alongside their Denuvo Anti-Tamper software, despite Denuvo’s controversial impact on game performance and its unpopular always-online requirement.

What is Denuvo Anti-Tamper, and why is it controversial within the gaming community?

Denuvo Anti-Tamper is DRM (Digital Rights Management) software that aims to prevent game piracy and tampering. It is controversial due to claims that it can negatively impact game performance by causing longer loading times and reduced framerates. Furthermore, its requirement for a constant internet connection for some games has been criticized for limiting how and where gamers can play.

Denuvo has been a significant player in the gaming industry for years, known for their digital rights management (DRM) solutions. Their technology is often implemented to prevent the cracking of game data and unauthorized distribution. However, Denuvo has been under scrutiny in the past, with players complaining about potential game performance issues related to its DRM technology. The introduction of TraceMark for Games marks another effort by Irdeto to address the challenge of protecting intellectual property in the gaming space, while still managing to stir some controversy among the gaming community due to its ties with Denuvo.
