Mystery Science Theater 3000 Creator Aims to Revive Show with Crowdfunding Campaign

Joel Hodgson, the creator of the popular series Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K), has kicked off a new crowdfunding initiative on the in-house platform Showmaker, aiming to fund the making of the show's Season 14. The announcement follows a similar effort orchestrated by Hodgson for Season 13 back in 2021.

The previous campaign resulted in the production of 13 new episodes and 13 new shorts. This run also saw the return of series stalwarts Jonah Heston and Joel Robinson, with Emily Connor introduced as a new host. MST3K, a beloved cult classic, appears to be seeking a revival yet again.

According to Hodgson, the number of episodes produced for the new season will rely heavily on the funds raised, with a range between 6 to 12 episodes. The ultimate goal is to have the new season ready to commemorate the show's 35th anniversary.

The crowdfunding scheme offers multiple tiers for contributors, and they are as follows:n - 6 new episodes and 6 new shorts added, along with 18 revamped classic episodes, if $4.8 million is raised.n - 9 new episodes and 9 corresponding shorts, in addition to 18 enhanced classic episodes, if the campaign reaches $6.1 million.n - If $7.4 million is achieved, there will be 12 new episodes and 12 new shorts, supplemented by 36 updated classic episodes.

It is worth mentioning that only 65% of the funds raised will actually contribute to generating new content. The remaining budget will be used for various purposes: roughly 29% will reward those working on the show and contribute to manufacturing physical rewards, 5% for associated campaign fees, and a remaining 1% is allocated for maintaining and improving the Gizmoplex - MST3K's independent streaming platform established to avoid dependency on network broadcasters. As part of the digital rewards bundle, donors get access to the Gizmoplex and new episodes.

Digital rewards also include downloads of Seasons 13 and 14, as well as the honor of having your name appear in the show credits. The success of this crowdfunding campaign rests on the support and enthusiasm of MST3K's dedicated fans who are crucial in bringing Season 14 to life.
