Gears of War co-creator, Cliff Bleszinski, believes the franchise needs a reboot similar to the one the God of War series experienced. While speaking to Comic Book, Bleszinski suggested he's more than willing to consult on such a project, providing Microsoft agrees to it.

The most recent mainline release of Gears of War - Gears 5 - was launched in 2019 and received a 9/10 review from IGN, despite the franchise being relatively quiet for several years. Bleszinski's suggestion refers to the highly successful reimagining of God of War by Sony Santa Monica in 2018, which underwent significant gameplay changes and subsequently spawned one of PlayStation's fastest selling games of all time - God of War Ragnarök.

Microsoft-owned Xbox Game Studios houses The Coalition, the first-party developer of the Gears of War series, which has boasted over 50 million unique users over its lifespan. In the same interview, Bleszinski also addressed the interest shown by movie director Zack Snyder in creating a Gears of War movie and supported the idea of actor Dave Bautista playing the protagonist, Marcus Fenix.

Netflix officially announced a Gears of War movie and an adult animated series based on the game in 2022. Current updates reveal Jon Spaihts, known for his work on Doctor Strange and Dune, is set to write the script although no information on a potential director has been released. Dave Bautista has shown keen interest in playing the role of Marcus Fenix, should this project move forward.
