Video game developer CD Projekt has invested about $125 million to revamp Cyberpunk 2077 after its launch, according to a recent report. This investment includes the funds spent on updating the game and developing the well-received Phantom Liberty expansion, starring actor Idris Elba.
Phantom Liberty alone cost about $62.7 million to create and roughly $21.6 million on promotional activities. Meanwhile, CD Projekt spent around $40.9 million to upgrade Cyberpunk 2077 to the standards of next-gen gaming consoles.
To put it in perspective, the original budget for creating Cyberpunk 2077 was about $316 million, far surpassing the approximate $105 million cost of making The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Despite the high costs, CD Projekt's efforts have helped turn around the reputation of the once failing game, which is now rated "Very Positive" on Steam and recommended by 87% of its users.
In other exciting news, CD Projekt announced a live-action Cyberpunk project during its Investor Day. Furthermore, the company provided sales figures for Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty and shared news of a leadership shake-up within the organization.
In terms of gameplay, the Phantom Liberty update altered several aspects of Cyberpunk 2077 like introducing a new perk system and enhancing the artificial intelligence. Interestingly, CD Projekt also integrated a feature allowing players to bypass the paid expansion completely via certain in-game dialogue choices. This comprehensive overhaul has led to a major turnaround for Cyberpunk 2077 and bodes well for CD Projekt's future in the RPG world.
