In the midst of Microsoft's ongoing effort to acquire Activision Blizzard for $69 billion, the tech giant also considered purchasing other significant video game publishers such as Square Enix, Sega, and Nintendo. Capcom, the esteemed company behind well-known franchises like Monster Hunter, Resident Evil, and Street Fighter, also appeared on Microsoft's potential acquisitions list. However, Capcom's COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto firmly stated in a Bloomberg interview at Tokyo Game Show 2023 that Capcom would respectively rebuff any Microsoft buyout offer due to its belief in maintaining equality among partners. Capcom's decision stems from its successful performance in the industry, boasting both record-breaking sales and impressive share prices. Additionally, Tsujimoto expressed that Capcom is not looking to acquire other companies either, but instead is more interested in promoting organic growth. Tsujimoto's sentiments were mirrored by Sega boss Shuji Utsumi, who also confirmed that his company is not for sale. Despite this potential pushback from Japanese companies, Microsoft is still on track to finalize its acquisition of Activicon Blizzard after receiving approval from the UK. Capcom delivered numerous updates on its games, including Dragon’s Dogma 2, Exoprimal, Street Fighter 6, and Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy during a special broadcast at Tokyo Game Show.
