april shutdown for nier mobile game

Jan 23, 2024 2:40 PM

The mobile installment of the Nier franchise, Nier Reincarnation, is set to shut down in April as announced by Square Enix. Despite the RPG's free-to-play status and having only been released in July 2021, the final update titled "Finale: Reincarnation," will roll out on March 28, marking the end of the service on April 29. Square Enix has expressed appreciation to the players and promises to continue delivering content and events until the closure. Meanwhile, the main series game Nier: Automata, developed by PlatinumGames and published by Square Enix, celebrates its seventh anniversary without news of a new mainline entry. Since its launch in 2017, Nier: Automata has achieved critical acclaim and impressive sales, solidifying its status with a remaster, anime adaptation, and various crossover promotions.

Why is Nier Reincarnation shutting down?

Square Enix has not provided specific reasons for the shutdown of Nier Reincarnation, but the closure follows common issues such as declining player numbers or financial infeasibility of maintaining the service.

Nier Reincarnation was a spin-off from the widely acclaimed action RPG Nier: Automata, which expanded the Nier universe into the mobile gaming landscape. The Nier series is known for its deep storytelling, memorable characters, and unique gameplay mechanics that frequently break the fourth wall. Nier: Automata, in particular, received high praise for interweaving its gameplay with philosophical themes, pushing boundaries on how narrative and mechanics can be integrated in video games. Developed by PlatinumGames, Nier: Automata presented a post-apocalyptic world filled with existential questions, drawing players into a multifaceted narrative that required multiple playthroughs to fully uncover.
