Apple facing charges in the EU The surprising truth

Jun 14, 2024 6:14 PM

Apple may soon face charges from EU regulators under the Digital Markets Act (DMA) for allegedly stifling competition on the App Store. According to the Financial Times, the European Commission has determined that Apple is charging developers who link users to outside purchases. The DMA, a regulation implemented late last year, is part of the EU's effort to curb the dominance and anti-competitive practices of major tech companies. This regulation allows third-party app stores to be released within the Apple App Store or Google Play. Epic Games and Microsoft are among the notable companies planning to launch their own app stores on these platforms.

Additionally, Apple is dealing with legal issues in the United States. The Department of Justice announced in March it was suing Apple for allegedly maintaining a monopoly over the smartphone market. This topic gained significant traction in 2020 when Epic Games sued Apple over antitrust behavior on the App Store. Although Apple won the case in 2021, the dispute continues with appeals and legal scrutiny.

What is the Digital Markets Act (DMA)?

The Digital Markets Act is a regulation by the European Union aimed at curbing the dominance and anti-competitive practices of major tech companies. It allows other companies to introduce third-party app stores within major digital storefronts like the Apple App Store and Google Play.

The case is reminiscent of the 2020 legal battle where Epic Games sued Apple, alleging anti-competitive practices on the App Store. The lawsuit highlighted issues around Apple's control over its ecosystem and its impact on various developers and competitors in the tech industry. Although Apple won the case initially, the case brought significant attention to the competitive dynamics in digital marketplaces.
